Students and teachers from schools in the Tower Hamlets area came to see Romeo and Juliet Docklands. We offered discounts for pre-booked school groups. SCHOOLS FEEDBACK Romeo and Juliet Docklands, The Space 27 January to 14 February “Excellent. The majority were glad they went. There were many students who would not normally take to a theatre trip. Excellent in its appreciation of who the audience were, it neither confused them nor talked down to them.” Mr A., Teacher, Langdon Park, 28 January “Forty Five Pupils, Four Teachers and Three Assistants attended. The visit was worthwhile. Students were studying Romeo and Juliet, so it was good for them to see a modern intake of the play. We would take our students to a similar event. The venue was good as the students felt like they were a part of the performance.” Ms W., Teacher, Langdon Park, 28 January “We attended with two Year 9 drama groups. Two teachers attended. Approximately fifty pupils attended. Any visit to see live performance is worthwhile. As a class we deconstructed what we saw, the elements and mediums that stood out and enabled the classes to help build a broader understanding of live theatre. The production helped to contextualise the play that the class was also studying for English as well as in drama. Absolutely I would take our pupils to a similar event again. It was an excellent opportunity. It would have been really good to also have a pre or post show workshop to even a Question and Answer with actors and director etc immediately after the performance.” Ms G, Teacher, George Green’s School, 28 January Who guards the guardians? “Dear Lyn Gardner, I was saddened by claims you have made. I am sure that you are aware that raising interest and understanding among secondary school children of culture and heritage is an important task. In the Isle of Dogs and in East London one of the greatest problems can be demoralization and an unthinking hostile indifference from those in other parts of London. I am sorry to say that your review contributes to this problem.” John Seaforth, Director, Letter to Lyn Gardner copied to the Editor, 5 February
